"Paula Peril": Valerie Perez

Parliamo intanto del personaggio. Chi è Paula?

Paula è intelligente e molto determinata. È ansiosa di buttarsi e di correre dei rischi pur di arrivare alla verità, ovunque possa portarla. È molto energica e con un atteggiamento tutt’altro che sciocco. È anche una persona gentile e alla mano ma anche solitaria – fino ad ora almeno. Mi piace molto che questa eroina salvi sempre la situazione senza avere particolari abilità. Il suo superpotere è la forza di volontà.

Puoi raccontarci il "dietro le quinte" di come hai ottenuto il ruolo? Hai parlato direttamente con James Watson?

Sì, sono felice di poter dire che James è sempre disponibile a rispondere alle domande. Ho lavorato con i creatori sullo sviluppo del personaggio molto prima di questo progetto. All’inizio James mi ha scritturata come modella per interpretare Paula Peril e ha richiesto il mio contributo per farla apparire esattamente come era nel fumetto. Ci eravamo già trovati in una situazione simile nel cortometraggio “Trapped in Flames” che ho co-prodotto e co-sceneggiato. Per questo film, James tiene conto di ogni suggerimento o appunto.

Valerie Perez e Paula Peril: quali sono gli elementi caratteriali che vi accomunano?

Siamo entrambe molto tenaci riguardo quello che vogliamo. Questa può essere una grande forza ma anche una maledizione. Paula e io siamo molto schiette e dirette. Non vogliamo fare giochetti o fingere, andiamo dritte al punto.

Qualche giorno fa, sul sito ufficiale del film ho visto alcune foto di te con la giovane Jacqueline McKenzie, che interpreta in un flashback una Paula ancora bambina. Cosa puoi dirci di questa scena, e quali conseguenze ha in seguito sulla vita di Paula?

Jacqueline interpreta Paula all’età di otto anni e dodici anni. È in questo periodo della sua vita che accadono gli eventi che sviluppano il suo lato investigativo e la spingono alla ricerca della verità. Non so quanto posso rivelare, ma dirò che il cattivo del film e Paula hanno dei trascorsi.

Cosa ci puoi dire del regista e del resto del cast? C'è affiatamento?

Il regista, Andy Rodriguez-McCradic, ha un’idea molto chiara e divertente di “Paula Peril: Midnight Is The Darkest Hour”. Nella sceneggiatura ci sono momenti di suspense, momenti paurosi, toccanti ed eccitanti, e siamo tutti ansiosi di affrontarli. Non ho ancora incontrato tutto il cast, ma Andy e le persone con cui ho lavorato finora sono state molto piacevoli.

Puoi descriverci una giornata di riprese?

Con il trucco, i costumi, un po’ di prove, e le riprese, è una giornata di circa dodici ore. Sul set molte cose avvengono contemporaneamente. Ci sono molte occasioni per intervenire e molte cose da fare tra una ripresa e l’altra e dopo che si sono concluse. Una volta entrata nel personaggio, posso girare in qualsiasi momento la troupe sia pronta. L’adrenalina tiene alta la mia energia e basso l’appetito. Sono sempre l’ultima a mangiare.

Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri, dopo aver completato questo film?

L’anno prossimo ho in programma di cominciare la produzione di un fan-film su Wonder Woman insieme al co-fondatore di Superherohype.com, Chris Mason. Siamo entrambi stanchi di aspettare che Hollywood faccia un film su Diana. Ci saranno molti contributi professionali e semi-professionali, così che l’omaggio sarà molto divertente da fare, e anche da guardare naturalmente.

Ad alcune convention sei apparsa vestita come Wonder Woman. Che rapporto hai con questo fumetto? In generale leggi i fumetti? E se sì quali?

Non ho un legame diretto col fumetto di Wonder Woman. Ho interpretato Wonder Woman per Adam Hughes, che sta lavorando su All Star Wonder Woman. Ho indossato il suo costume anche per un’iniziativa benefica all’ospedale di Los Angeles.
Certamente leggo i fumetti. Mi piace leggere gli X-Men di Joss Whedon e Y-The Last Man di Brian K. Vaughan. Mi sto anche facendo prendere dai Runaways di Whedon-Vaughan. Inoltre leggo la Modesty Blaise degli anni ’60 e l’ultima Wonder Woman scritta da Gail Simone.

First of all, let’s talk about the character. Can you describe Paula?

Paula is smart, independent and very determined. She is willing to rush in and take risks to get closer to the truth wherever it may lead her. As such she is usually very active with a no nonsense attitude. She is also a kind and down-to-earth person but very much a loner - at least, until recently. I really appreciate that this heroine saves the day without any special abilities. Her super power is strength of will.

Can you tell us the "behind the scenes" about how you got the role? Have you talked to James Watson directly to discuss the role?

Yes, I’m happy to say he is always available to answer any questions. I have been working with the creator on character development long before this project. In the beginning James hired me as a Paula Peril model and solicited my input to help flesh out exactly who she was for the comics. We have already been in a similar position before with the Paula Peril film short “Trapped in the flames” that I produced and co-wrote. For this feature, James does keep in contact with any general notes or advice.

Valerie Perez and Paula Peril: what are the elements that unites you?

We both are very tenacious when it comes to our wants and the mission at hand. This can be a great strength and a curse at the same time. Paula and I are both very up front and open about what we want. We don’t want to play games or put up false fronts – let’s just get right down to business.

Some days ago, on the Paula Peril official movie site, I have seen some photos of you with young Jacqueline McKenzie, who plays a young Paula in a flashback. What can you tell us about this scene and what consequence does it have on the life of Paula subsequently?

Jacqueline plays Paula at ages eight and twelve-years-old. It is during this period in her life the big event that develops her investigative side and leads her on a search for truth. I am not sure how much of the story I can relay but I will say that the movie’s villain and Paula’s family have a history.

What can you say about the director and the rest of cast?

The director, Andy Rodriguez-McCradic, has a clear and highly enjoyable vision for “Paula Peril: Midnight Is The Darkest Hour”. There are some suspenseful, creepy, touching and exciting elements in his script and we all can’t wait to tackle them. I still have yet to meet the entire cast but so far Andy and the entire cast I have worked with have been a pleasure.

Can you describe a typical filming day?

With makeup, wardrobe, a little rehearsal, and actual shooting it is about a twelve hour day. On set there are several things happening at once. There is always plenty of ways to step in and assist with tasks and coordinating communication between takes as shots are set up and adjusted. Once in character I usually stay on my feet and available to film whenever the scene and crew is ready. My adrenaline keeps my energy high and appetite low – I’m always the last one to eat.

What are your next projects?

Next year I plan to start production on a Wonder Woman fan film along with co-founder of SuperheroHype.com, Chris Mason. We both are tired of waiting on Hollywood to get our dose of Diana. There will be many professional and semi-professionals pitching in so the homage should be very exciting to make and, hopefully, to watch as well.

In some comic book conventions you appeared dressed as Wonder Woman. What relationship do you have with this comic book? Do you read comics? And if yes, which title?

I do not have a direct relationship to DC’s Wonder Woman comic. I have done some Wonder Woman modeling for artist Adam Hughes who is working on All Star Wonder Woman. Also I have appeared in costume at children’s hospitals in Los Angeles for charity.
I absolutely do read comic books. I enjoy reading Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men and Brian K. Vaughan’s Y The Last Man. I am also catching up on latest of Vaughan-to-Whedon Runaways. Plus I read the 1960’s Modesty Blaise and keeping current on the latest Wonder Woman now being written by Gail Simone.
